| A combination square is a versatile tool.
High-end combination squares come with angle finders, center heads and protractor heads, but when most people talk about a combination square they're talking about a square that looks like this one. This type of combination square can be used as a square, a level and a measuring device. It usually comes with a small scratch awl. The combination square can be used to mark angles of 90 or 45 degrees. To change the square from the standard 90 degree setting, loosen the adjusting nut and slide the blade to the other end. Tighten the nut. You can now use the square to mark 45 degree angles. Some carpenters like to set the square with half the blade on each side of the head so they can mark 45 or 90 degree angles on narrow boards without adjustment. The blades of most combination squares have inch markings on one side and millimeter markings on the other side. It can be used like a ruler for short measurements that are 12 inches or less. The combination square also has a level vial for leveling or plumbing your work. Set the flat edge of the head on a horizontal surface to check for level. If the bubble is in the center of the vial, between the lines, the surface is level. Hold the edge of the blade against a wall to check for plumb. The more centered the bubble in the vial the more plumb the wall. Because the edge on a square is ahort the accuracy of the level is limited and in most cases should only be used for general reference. A conbination square can be used to draw a straight line as long as the width of the material is less than 12 inches. Loosen the adjusting nut and line up the measurement you want with the 90 degree side of the head. Tighten the nut. Put the square against the material. Put the pencil against the end of the blade. Most conbination squares have a scratch awl integrated into the head. The scratch awl can be used to mark wood or metal. In most cases you will only want to use the scratch awl when marking a measurement for sawing. Otherwise the scratch awl can leave a permanent mark on your work. For the do-it-youselfer or the pro, a combination square is an essential tool for most home contruction projects. |
